CTC Refund 2026: When Payments Arrive, Who Qualifies, and How to Apply

The child tax credit for tax year 2025 is $2,200 for each qualifying child, with a maximum refund of $1,700. To receive it, a qualified taxpayer needs to file a 2026 return with Schedule 8812.

The IRS will likely start accepting refund applications for the tax year 2025 from the third week of January 2026. Once this begins, all taxpayers will be able to file their taxes, and the refund will be received.

In this article, we discuss the child tax credit refund for 2026 in detail. By reading this article, you can learn how you can get it, how much refund you can get, when you’re likely to receive it, and much more.

What is the Child Tax Credit?

The CTC is a federal tax benefit given to eligible parents to help them cover the cost of raising children under 17. This amount, totaling $2,200 for tax year 2025, allows a taxpayer to reduce their taxes and receive a refund if the amount they owe is less than the credit.

The child tax credit is beneficial to Americans in many ways, helping many homes raise children. If you’re one of those parents struggling to keep up with your children’s expenses, it’s been introduced here for families like yours to get a little financial help.

What is eligible for CTC?

The 2026 tax season is about to begin, and taxpayers will immediately begin filing their returns. Many people will claim this tax credit, and you may be one of them. To claim it, you child must meet the requirements:

  • You have a child under age 17 at the end of the tax year.
  • Your child has a valid Social Security Number issued for work.
  • You claim the child as a dependent on your tax return.
  • The child lived with you for more than half the year.
  • The child did not provide more than half of their own support.
  • You meet the relationship test, i.e., he or she must be your child, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or their descendant.

Your income shouldn’t be below $200,000 if you are single and above $400,000 if you are married. If your income exceeds the threshold, the credit is reduced. For each $1,000 increase, the CTC is reduced by $50.

How much CTC will be received?

The amount of child tax credit refund a taxpayer receives depends on how much tax they owe and how many qualifying children they have. The more you have qualifying children, the maximum you can get benefits.

Let’s assume that the tax you owe after claiming other deductions and tax credits is $1,500, and in this situation, if you have only one child who qualifies, you can claim $2,200 and receive a CTC $700 refund.

If you have more than one child, your refund amount can be higher, but you must note now that the maximum refund can be $1700 for each child. Understand about the payout by the example given below.

Let’s assume that the tax you owe is only $1,000 and you have 3 qualifying children. The credit you can claim will be $6,600; after deducting $1,000, $5,600 will be left, but the refund table amount is only $5,100 for 3 children, based on $1,700 for each child, so you will get the same amount as your refund.
